Hardware
When motivated speaker builders design a small loudspeaker, they tend to look to their larger, more serious products for inspiration and do things properly. MDF cabinet, thick rubber feet, analog knobs, aluminum front grille, real screws, Tolex covering, and a silicone carry handle that looks as though it’s been nailed directly to the housing.
The Vestlyd Stage A4 weighs 4.2 kilograms and, at 16 x 26 x 16 cm, looks thoroughly comfortable with itself. That said, it’s really a speaker for indoors or a summer jam session. The IPX2 protection rating handles sweat-laden air without complaint, but won’t stand up to heavier rain. Outside use requires shelter.
Behind the front grille, a 4-inch woofer and a 0.75-inch soft dome tweeter are clearly visible. Two rotary knobs for volume and power, along with a bass reflex port, complete the classic appearance.
On the rear panel: a pairing switch, a small rotary knob for bass adjustment, a 3.5mm aux input, and a USB-C port. Danish understatement at its finest, and a stage crew’s dream.
Tech Specs
The Stage A4 pairs via Bluetooth 5.0. Multipoint is not an option, but alongside AAC the speaker also supports aptX and aptX HD as higher-quality codec options. For anyone who finds all of that too modern, there’s always an analog cable around the back.
Vestlyd has deliberately left out an app, arguing that the whole thing just gets too complicated and that wrong EQ presets get dialed in far too easily. Want it louder? Turn the volume knob on the front. Want more bass? There’s a small knob on the back for that. Minimalism in practice.
Battery life sits at 18 hours, which is solid for a device of this size, though a larger battery could certainly have been accommodated. Not a record-breaker, but more than adequate.
Sound
The Vestlyd Stage A4 delivers a powerful bass with a pleasantly warm character across the mids and highs. The new jazz album from Nils Wülker sounds earthy, not clinical. Restrained, not intrusive. Velvety, not structured.
The same quality comes through with David Gilmour’s “Between Two Points”: direct and simply well-tuned. No frills, and since only the bass is adjustable anyway, there’s no temptation to start tweaking. You just let the speaker play.
That works equally well with Schiller and other electronic music, where everything fits together nicely, almost right up to maximum volume. When the music becomes too complex, though, the limits of resolution become apparent and things start to blur and lose definition. For a full-scale concert evening, you’ll need better equipment.
Verdict
At €349, the Vestlyd Stage A4 is not a bargain, particularly given that its tech specs are solid but far from cutting-edge. What the Stage A4 is actually doing, quite deliberately, is stepping out of time, and it wins you over with craftsmanship, minimal use of plastic, and a reduction to the essentials.
Its sound is warm and inviting, with enough power in the bass to turn things up when the moment calls for it. This is a speaker for the workshop while tinkering, a relaxed evening with a beer or a glass of red, a barbecue with friends, and for anyone who has a genuine appreciation for solid PA-inspired speaker design.
