Miiego Boom

Sporty Bluetooth over-ears with decent punch

In a nutshell

Miiego Boom gave me the motivation for training, pounding in my ear! But the prospective Boom wearer is not limited to just athletes, even though the accessories, such as the washable ear pads, are a really appealing feature for this target market. Miiego sees the Boom as “2-in-1” headphones, for “sport and relaxation”. In terms of intended use, that is fair enough, but musically the Boom are not “one-for-all” headphones. For fans of mainly electronic music, the Miiego Boom should provide just the right soundtrack for training.

The Danish manufacturer Miiego designs its headphones especially for the athlete, and so I was somewhat surprised by the Miiego Boom: I find the idea of an everyday over-ear sports headphone difficult to imagine, but with the Boom, Miiego is saying: “This is possible!”. We took a closer look at these “2-in-1” headphones which are designed for both “sports AND relaxation”!

Features

My first impressions after unpacking the Miiego Boom: fancy, fancy! A matt black plastic surface and ear cups that are attached not with a U-clip, but form a single unit with the headband. The Boom looks very elegant and was deservingly awarded the Red Dot design prize in 2019. The headband and the folding hinges are made of metal, and thanks to the smooth yet defined ratchet are easy to adjust the size accurately. These headphones can be folded for transport, but the ear cups themselves have little room to move.

Technology

Miiego are a bit stingy with technical details, but a look under the hood reveals a dynamic driver with a diameter of about 40 mm. The frequency response is stated as 20 Hz to 20.000 Hz; there’s no information about the impedance, but it should be low enough for a smartphone. With a weight of just under 290 grams, the Boom is in the midrange of wireless Bluetooth headphones. One could also say: the Boom is a welterweight. Bluetooth 5.0 provides wireless transmission and, in addition to music headphones, the Boom can, of course, be used to make, receive and end calls. Miiego provide the Boom with a powerful battery, the manufacturer states a runtime of up to 35 hours and our test confirmed this maximum score.

Headphones with interchangeable covers

An intensive training session means sweating, and as a manufacturer of sports headphones, Miiego is aware of this problem. The solution: the Boom comes with two pairs of ear pads. One set of ear pads is made of standard imitation leather and the additional pair is made of washable fabric. The pads can be changed very easily thanks to a bayonet lock and many other sets of ear pads in various colours and designs are available in the Miiego shop. A practical feature in my opinion as it is very hygienic! Of course, sweat is a form of liquid, but the Miiego designers have gone one step further, making the Boom rainproof and even IPX5-certified.

Sound

Having the word “Boom” in the name of your product raises expectations about sound and the Miiego Boom powerfully fulfils them: the bass hits like a boxer throwing a straight right in the twelfth round. But the fun comes not only from the sheer power; I liked the precision with which the bass was reproduced even more! No booming and no sludge in the even lowest frequencies; instead, crisp and clean peaks that let the bass drum and bassline of some well-known songs shine through. The second focus of the Miiego Boom lies in the high frequencies; electronic drum loops and percussion elements beyond 3 kHz emerge radiantly from the sound image.

But where there is light, we also find shadow: between powerful basses and radiant highs there are more frequencies, and in the 800 Hz to 2 kHz range I don’t feel the Boom’s tuning was as precise and clean as in the basses. In other words: the Boom is not a musical all-rounder as these headphones are definitely for fans of electronic music. Electric guitars are not among these headphone’s favourite sounds.

For stereo imaging, both thumbs-up again: the individual instruments and voices are precisely distributed on the stereo stage and in stereo recordings, you can literally hear into the depths of the sound stage.

Everyday test

The Miiego Boom presses noticeably on the head, but it shouldn’t come off even during intensive workouts. On the running track, the Boom was just too big and too heavy for me; they sat firmly on my head, but I couldn’t really get used to wearing over-ears while running. This was especially noticeable since the shape of the Miiego ear pads and my ears didn’t really match, with a few millimetres making the difference between “comfortable” and “tight”. It’s always the same with over-ear headphones: there is no standard ear and therefore no ear cups that always fit. But: this is not a point of criticism of the Miiego Boom. It just brings up an important point: You buy your headphones like you buy your running shoes, you need to go to the store and try them on!
