The closed-back over-ear Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X blends the strengths of the original DT 770 Pro with elements from the DT 700 Pro X, offering both a familiar aesthetic and technical upgrades. Initially released as a limited edition, it is now a permanent part of the line-up.

Background and position in the range

The DT 770 Pro has been a studio mainstay for around 40 years, used by professionals and hobbyists alike. Released during Beyerdynamic’s centenary celebrations, the DT 770 Pro X Limited Edition introduced updated components and expanded technical capabilities. The DT 770 Pro X retains these upgrades and is now available as a standard model, offering a broader frequency range and improved handling while staying true to the DT 770 family’s sound signature.

Accessories

The DT 770 Pro X comes with a detachable 3 m straight mini-XLR to 3.5 mm stereo cable, plus a 6.35 mm adapter for use with professional gear. A drawstring carrying pouch keeps dust away during storage and protects against light transport damage. The package also includes a printed history of the brand’s 100 years and a small leaflet explaining ear pad replacement.

Design and build

At first glance, the DT 770 Pro X is nearly identical to its predecessor. It features closed-back, fibre-reinforced plastic ear cups, soft silver-grey velour ear pads, the signature metal yokes, and a padded, replaceable headband. The horizontal silver nameplate remains, unlike on the DT 700 Pro X.

A small ergonomic tweak reduces headband padding thickness at the highest point to avoid pressure build-up. As with the DT 700 Pro X, the cable is detachable and single-sided, a practical feature for studio work and long sessions.

Technical specifications

The DT 770 Pro X uses Beyerdynamic’s STELLAR.45 dynamic drivers, also found in the DT 700 Pro X. They deliver the bass character, transient precision, and overall detail retrieval of the original DT 770 Pro, while extending the frequency range from an impressive 5 Hz up to 40 kHz. This far exceeds human hearing in both bass and treble extension, and offers more high-frequency reach than the base DT 770 Pro model.

Instead of the original’s three impedance options (32, 80, and 250 ohms), the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X has a measured impedance of about 50 ohms — a good compromise for use with a wide range of devices. Its measured maximum SPL is around 100 dB SPL, which is slightly higher than the standard DT 770 Pro.

Handling and comfort

The automatic size adjustment works as expected, with a slightly firm but precise ratcheting mechanism. At 298 g without cable, the DT 770 Pro X is lightweight and comfortable. The soft velour pads enclose the ears fully, with a clamping force (656 g measured) that keeps the headphones stable even during quick head movements.

The single-sided cable routing provides good mobility for right-handed users. Combined with replaceable ear pads, cable, and headband padding, this makes the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X a service-friendly and adaptable headphone for long-term use.

Sound impressions

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X delivers a wide, open-sounding presentation despite its closed-back design. High frequencies are transparent and detailed, contributing to strong speech intelligibility. However, the emphasis on sibilance frequencies can be fatiguing, especially when monitoring vocal-heavy or guitar-driven material.

Bass reproduction is full and tightly controlled, with no sign of the boominess sometimes found in closed designs. Even the lowest sub-bass frequencies are reproduced cleanly and with good separation from the mids and highs.

Transient handling is sharp and punchy, enhancing dynamics and articulation. Passive isolation is good but not extreme, making the DT 770 Pro X suitable for most, though not all, monitoring and recording situations. Stereo imaging is spacious, with good depth placement, giving mixes a lively and dimensional character.

Conclusion

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X retains the visual identity of the original DT 770 Pro while integrating the modern driver technology and cable system of the DT 700 Pro X. Its balanced combination of deep, accurate bass, extended treble, and strong detail retrieval makes it an excellent tool for critical listening, monitoring, and recording — provided you can tolerate its bright sibilance region. Isolation is good, though not at the very top tier for closed-back models.

Considering it’s priced lower than the DT 700 Pro X while offering a similarly strong performance, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X represents very good value for money in the professional headphone market.
