Soundcore Boom 2 Pro by Anker – the hardware
Weighing 3.75 kilograms, the Soundcore Boom 2 Pro can be easily lifted out of the box by its solid carrying handle, and thanks to the included shoulder strap, it can be comfortably carried deep into your outdoor adventure. Robustness is a top priority for the Boom 2 Pro, and the speaker is made from very sturdy plastic. The connections on the back – aux-in and USB-C for charging the speaker or powering other devices (power bank function) – are hidden behind a thick rubber seal. The control buttons on top are rubberised with a good tactile feel and backlighting.
Anker has given the Soundcore Boom 2 Pro an IP68 rating. In practical terms, the “6” means “dustproof,” providing complete protection against dust and solid particles. The “8” means “protected against water ingress” – whether from rain or water jets – and no water will get in even if the speaker is floating or submerged for extended periods.
With two 4.5-inch woofers and two 0.75-inch silk tweeters behind the metal front grille, the Soundcore Boom 2 Pro delivers 100 watts of power, which – in combination with BassUp 2.0 technology – increases by another 40 watts, bringing the Bluetooth speaker up to 140 watts. That’s reason enough to leave the neighbourhood behind and head for more remote terrain. And when it gets dark, the Boom 2 Pro entertains with its built-in light show, which comes alive through the passive radiators on the sides, glowing, flickering, and pulsing.
Soundcore Boom 2 Plus by Anker
Robust Bluetooth speaker with a maximum of 140 watts and good sound.
Function and operation
The simplest way to connect is with a 3.5mm mini-jack audio cable – plug in and go. Bluetooth 5.3 works just as easily and, thanks to multipoint, allows two devices to connect at once. With a clear line of sight, you can be over 60 metres from the speaker. Using the Boom 2 Pro’s control panel, you can manage all key functions directly: “Power on/off,” “Bluetooth,” “Play/Pause/Skip,” “Volume,” “Light show,” “PartyCast,” and “BassUp.”
With the PartyCast button, you can pair two Boom Pro units for true stereo sound. If you have other PartyCast-enabled Soundcore speakers, you can connect over 100 of them into a huge system – not stereo, but impressively loud. For finer control of the speaker’s features, you’ll need the Soundcore app. Here you can turn off notification sounds, install updates, and set auto power-off times. The equaliser section offers four sound presets as well as the option to create and save custom profiles via a 9-band EQ. Turning your phone to landscape mode unlocks a full-band EQ, letting you fine-tune the nine bands with even greater precision.
For the light show, you can choose from eight presets, each of which can be customised by changing the base colours. Brightness can also be adjusted, so there’s plenty of variety.
The sound of the Soundcore Boom 2 Pro
The Boom 2 Pro delivers a rich, punchy sound. The bass, which goes down to 40 Hz with the BassUp function, provides a solid, tight foundation – no boomy rumble, just dry, satisfying thump. On top of that, the full midrange gives voices and instruments strong presence.
The highs sound pleasantly open and spacious, allowing the Boom 2 Pro to maintain power and stability even at over two-thirds of its maximum volume while presenting a fairly wide soundstage. In combination with the equaliser and BassUp, you get a sound tailored to your preferences, capable of filling a large garden or barn. That said, maximum volume shouldn’t be used for too long, as at extreme levels, the sound loses some transparency and fullness, becoming a bit fatiguing.
Battery life and charging
Battery life is stated at 20 hours at medium volume. Thanks to fast charging, the Soundcore Boom 2 Pro can be charged with 30 watts in three hours. Via the rear USB-C port, the speaker can also serve as a power bank for your mobile devices.
Conclusion
The Soundcore Boom 2 Pro by Anker is a solid and extremely well-protected speaker that performs well in terms of sound. It delivers party fun even in rough terrain and maintains full, solid sound even at low volumes. The side light show is a nice musical accompaniment, though somewhat limited in its expressiveness.
