Above all, the Mackie MC-50BTs impressed us with their good “usability”: They can be made very small and stowed away, they have a long battery life, they look pleasantly elegant and, thanks to touch operation, there is no need to get your phone (when used as an external player) out of your pocket very often. A little more accuracy in recognising touch gestures and a slightly more balanced bass response would certainly have raised the rating of the MC-50BT a little higher, but in general, listening to music and multimedia applications with the MC-50BT was a lot of fun.

However, these wireless over-ears have the potential for use as versatile everyday headphones that provide a coherent, powerful sound when listening to music, watching films, gaming on a mobile device or exercising. With their foldable design, weatherproof finish and long-lasting battery, these headphones are ideally equipped for this kind of use.

No further questions, Your Honour: The verdict is that Mackie MC-450 are excellent studio headphones, which – if you like a high-range and impulsive sound image – are not out of place even for hi-fi friends. Of course, they don’t generate the same level of pressure in the bass range as the closed MC-350 model, but thanks to the open back, you don’t get an unpleasant build up of heat on your ears as quickly.

These Neumann NDH 20 closed-back over-ear headphones are an ideal aid for analytical sound applications such as recording, editing and mixing in studio environments. They do a good job at the deepest depths of the bass range, while also performing brilliantly when it comes to midrange differentiation. Additionally, a more discreet performance in the highs results in a less pronounced stereo image, a lower transient definition and a more extensive depth graduation.

The lightweight Ultrasone Lapis are notable for excellent battery life and good speech intelligibility during phone calls, except for in loud background noise. The noise-cancelling mainly reduces low-frequency sources of interference. What these weatherproof True Wireless in-ears don’t have are settings for individual earpieces and sound, as there is no app connection. In this respect, a full-bodied, assertive sound is all set for mobile use, but this does not always seem sufficiently controlled in the bass range.

Mackie market the MC-350 as professional monitor headphones and that’s what they are – period. They impress with a firm fit, robust workmanship, a great supply of connection cables, a practical case and last but not least, a convincing sound. This is especially ideal for the intended application, because they demonstrate themselves to be sonically assertive, with very stable levels and precise transients. These are exactly the qualities that are needed for recording music and speech, in the studio and during live mix-down – in short, for use in all professional, result-oriented work situations.

Extensive power reserves for driving a wide range of headphone models, a successful variety of connections for different applications and a flexibly adjustable crossfeed function are the highlights of the Swissonic HA660. But in terms of sound, this headphone amplifier has nothing to hide. It delivers a balanced sound image with a slightly warm colouration and amazing bass. In the 200 euro price range, the Swissonic HA660 is unrivalled with this range of functions and sound. Therefore, I can only give it a recommendation.

With the MC-40BT, Mackie (RRP just under 179 euros) can celebrate a successful debut in the Bluetooth headphones market. The quickly established connection and the implementation of media control commands via the earpiece are well worthy of praise. Of course, the well-balanced sound and the good speech intelligibility are also positives.

The K92 brings newcomers to the world of AKG headphones plenty for a very reasonable price tag. What’s more, there’s a good finish and signs of quality workmanship on show here, with a design that ticks plenty of boxes. The lower price hasn’t meant compromises in the usual areas. The K92 offers a midrange sound with a good hint of bass, with user-friendly functionality and slick looks that will bowl you over.

In addition to the quality levels of workmanship and eye-catching aesthetics, the AKG K702 really convinces with its wearing comfort and pleasant handling properties. Last but not least, the crystal-clear sound will make it hard for studio users and hi-fi fans to switch to another model once they’ve added the K702 to their audiophile assortment.
