Sennheiser Momentum 2

The King is dead - long live the King

In a nutshell

Sennheiser chooses the approach of evolution instead of revolution: maintaining the overall concept, but introducing improvements in detail. The second generation offers the same high level of choice of materials, workmanship and sound. A clear recommendation to buy!

The Sennheiser Momentum 2 is the successor of the successful Momentum. But is it a revolution, or an evolution?

What’s new?

With the Momentum, Sennheiser set the bar quite high in the arena of portable, circumaural closed headphones. But now comes its direct successor, the Momentum 2. The Momentum 2 has a folding mechanism, which is definitely needed since the larger dimensions come at the expense of portability. When folded, however, this new model is very compact so it can fit in the accompanying small softcase. If this still seems too bulky for you, just use the fleece carrying bag that Sennheiser also provides.
The 1.4 m long pluggable cable provides a complete 3-button remote control with microphone. There are different versions of the Momentum 2, compatible with iOS and Android devices, which are sold separately. You won’t, however, find a replacement cable without the remote control or jack adapter as both were included with the Momentum.

Comfort

The new, very soft and asymmetrical ear pads are made of lambskin and provide sufficient space on the large ear cups. In principle, nothing has changed in the head cushion – it is still made of somewhat harder leather and is thin in nature. At 228 g including cable, the Momentum 2 is slightly heavier, which is noticeable when wearing. It’s not uncomfortable at all, though, as it’s so light and airy that you forget all about the extra weight.

Processing

The Momentum 2 has inherited the perfect finish of its predecessor. It has the same high-quality leather on the stainless steel temples and ear cushions. Everywhere is perfectly sewn, screwed and deburred – there’s nothing to criticise at all. The new folding joints engage neatly and appear very stable, while the ear cups are made of high-quality, lightweight plastic and are free of material defects. The cable, together with its very small 90 degree angled plug, and the remote control, with its defined pressure points, are as high quality as they are durable.

Sound

In terms of sound, the Momentum 2 plays similarly to its predecessor. There are strong, clean and deep basses that meet fresh, audible mids. The highs are somewhat reduced without drowning. The sound is energetic and without break from low bass to super high frequencies, with natural timbres and high resolution. In direct comparison to the original, the new model sounds a bit fresher, has a bit more air in the sound, and shows a bit more detail and depth. In addition, the Momentum 2 is a bit louder at the same power, but it does lose a bit of crispness. The bottom line is a slight but significant improvement!
