The Fostex T60RPmk2 is the latest version of the semi-open over-ear headphone, equipped with updated planar magnetic drivers that deliver a warm, studio-grade sound.

The Fostex T60RPmk2 may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking about studio headphones, but its predecessor proved to be a strong alternative to more established classics. With its refined design and updated drivers, the mk2 builds on that reputation, aiming to deliver even greater precision.

Accessories and optional upgrades

The package is modest but well thought-out. Alongside the headphones, Fostex T60RPmk2 includes a 1.55 m straight Y-cable made from high-purity OFC copper, with dual mini-jacks connecting to each ear cup. A red and black ring indicates the correct channel orientation, while discreet markings on the headband identify left and right.

A gold-plated 6.3 mm stereo adapter is provided, as well as a soft fabric pouch with drawstring closure. Optional upgrades include a balanced 4.4 mm cable and ultra-soft synthetic microfibre ear pads.

Materials and build

The most striking feature of the Fostex T60RPmk2 is its ear cups, crafted from solid black walnut. Each headphone is unique thanks to the natural grain of the wood. The build quality is excellent, with leather headband, sturdy metal adjustment arms, and ear pads made from convincingly soft faux leather that mimics lambskin.

Robust and elegant, the Japanese-made T60RPmk2 balances natural materials with matte black finishes, creating a refined and professional appearance.

Planar magnetic driver technology

The Fostex T60RPmk2 features a new generation of Fostex’s RP planar magnetic drivers. Designed for greater consistency in diaphragm movement, these drivers provide a cleaner, more natural sound than the previous model.

The frequency response covers an impressive 10 Hz to 40 kHz, well beyond the limits of human hearing. With an impedance of 28 ohms, the T60RPmk2 can be driven by portable devices and audio interfaces without requiring a dedicated headphone amplifier. A sensitivity of 96 dB/mW ensures a good balance between efficiency and headroom, improving dynamics over the original version.

Comfort and handling

The memory foam ear pads offer a snug, comfortable fit, with a cut-out size that should suit most ears well. However, the pads are not breathable, which can lead to heat build-up during long sessions.

The leather headband adjusts smoothly, holds its position firmly, and contributes to a secure, stable fit even with quick head movements. At just 360 g (without cable), the T60RPmk2 is light enough for long sessions without fatigue.

One drawback is that the dual mini-jack connectors lack a locking mechanism, meaning the cable can disconnect if pulled. The supplied adapter is also a push-fit rather than a screw-on type, which may disappoint at this price point.

Sound impressions

The new RP drivers provide a clean, resonant-free sound with a warm tonal balance. High frequencies are detailed and smooth, while the midrange is rich and finely nuanced. Guitar tones, for example, are rendered with excellent detail without becoming harsh.

Upper mids, however, can emphasise vocal sibilance, which may be distracting in certain mixes. The bass response is full and powerful, extending convincingly into the sub-bass range. Even very low frequencies, such as those found in modern urban music, are delivered with ease.

Dynamics are strong, though transients are more rounded than razor-sharp. With highly dynamic classical material, such as Stravinsky’s Firebird, the headphones begin to reach distortion limits at moderate listening levels.

The stereo image is natural, with a soundstage that reflects the semi-open design. The Fostex T60RPmk2 is particularly well-suited for acoustic, jazz, blues, and classical recordings. Pop and EDM, on the other hand, can sound less flattering due to the emphasised upper mids.

Conclusion

The Fostex T60RPmk2 is a well-crafted professional headphone that combines premium materials, elegant design, and warm, detailed sound. Its planar magnetic drivers deliver an expansive frequency range and natural presentation, making it particularly suitable for mixing and mastering at moderate levels, as well as for genres that benefit from warmth and authenticity.

While the lack of locking connectors and breathable pads are minor drawbacks, the overall package remains compelling. For those seeking exactly this sound signature — warm, detailed, and musical — the Fostex T60RPmk2 is a highly capable choice.
