Sennheiser CX Sport

A Bluetooth Sports Superstar with Great Sound Performance

In a nutshell

Thanks to the inclusion of the Ear Fins, the Sennheiser CX Sport sits extremely well and securely in the ear, while delivering clear and rich sound with no annoying after-effects. This is an excellent feature that will certainly go down well with those looking for the best in mobile use. The battery life of six hours, combined with a quick-charge option of 10 minutes delivering an hour of playback, is another key selling feature. The question as to whether you need compromise on sound quality when enjoying your media out on the go will be answered in no uncertain terms by the Sennheiser CX Sport, with the device demonstrating that superior sound and intensive sporting activity can go hand in hand.

Feeling like we’ve been here before? Well, we might have, but now you can enjoy the added benefit of sweat and splash-proof design to boot. Not to mention, plenty of colour! The eye-catching CX Sport distinguishes itself from its rather drab brother, the CX 6.00 BT, and clearly demonstrates that sporting applications and good sound need not be mutually exclusive. If the CX Sport can deliver one thing, it’s sound!

First Impressions

Four different sets of earmolds are included, ranging in size from XS to L, while there’s also three sets of ear hooks (S, M, L) included. Sennheiser refers to these as Ear Fins, no doubt due to their aesthetic design. What’s more, there are charging cables, a neoprene pouch, a clip and documentation included in the overall package.

After removing the lightweight headphones from their inlay packaging, the rather unusual design instantly stands out. In particular, you have to attach the battery and remote separately to the left and right earpieces, under the earpieces themselves and on the cable. This allows for evenly distributed pull on the ears when wearing them, enhancing the overall wearing experience that’s a signature for Sennheiser devices.

As with the CX 6.00 BT, there’s a loop clip on the CX Sport to vary the cable length, which unfortunately cannot be removed. This means you’ll always have to carry this loop with you, which may ultimately force a small bend on the cable itself.

Nevertheless, everything is accounted for here and what is here is striking to look at. Admittedly, however, the Ear Fins seem a little oversized, but function wins out. They succeed surprisingly well when it comes to fixing the CX Sport in the right position, holding it to a useful position within the ear and keeping it in place, even during significantly intense movements.

Open to Intensive Workouts

Once you’ve connected the CX to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.2 and began music playback, aptX and aptX LL provide adequate transmission with latency minimisation. If you’re not dealing with an Apple iPhone or iPad, however, you won’t find such support due to a current licensing issue. AAC is on the horizon, however. The CX Sport delivers superb sound playback when you’re out on the track or running through the wilds. There’s rich bass, great mids and superb highs – with everything beautifully balanced and defined. What’s more, they are extremely comfortable. Certain tracks are so clear and crisp you feel as though you’re on the very stage yourself while more rocky media with heavy use of guitars plays close to the ear and delights with honest scrambling and a rough character. To sum it up, after running for five kilometres, I was left feeling that other in-ears on the market have plenty of catching up to do in this respect. However, the CX Sport also delivers well when it comes to more nuanced music, with clear and light-footed audio that makes for magical music enjoyment. The right-hand remote is fully iOS-compatible and comes with three buttons, which are all easily controlled, allowing for full functionality of all common features. These include call acceptance, which delivers a good quality of voice transmission thanks to a solidly performing microphone.
